Montefano Birthplace of Pope Marcellus II
Marcello Cervini was born in this building, once called Palazzo dei Priori, on May 6, 1501. Elected Pope in 1555 for only 22 days with the name of Marcello II, he was the last Pope to use his own name. After being ordered a priest (1535), Pope Paul III appointed him cardinal of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem, (1539) then Bishop of Reggio Emilia, and lastly of Gubbio (1544). He was one of three legates of the Council of Trent (1545-1563) and presided, for the first three years, with great freedom of mind defending the papal authority. Linked in some way to "our" Pontiff is the famous "Missa Papae Marcelli" or "Mass for Pope Marcellus II" by Giovanni da Palestrina for six-seven voices.
