Our Lady of Sorrows has been venerated in Appignano ever since 1550 when the Council voted to repair a shrine that was dedicated to her. However, it was rebuilt in 1746 in the Santa Croce quarter because it was in such poor condition. Thanks to the continuous offerings left for the miraculous image, it was possible to build a Church in the place of the shrine which took place from 1841 until 1859. This church ideally represents the Sanctuary of Appignano and its construction was strongly supported by both the population and the town authorities.

The church facade represents an interesting element of urban decor in the Santa Croce Quarter and stands as an important reference point of a grand formal quality for that slight vertical thrust from the portals, from the lateral niches and from the pilasters. 18th century.
