The Square Tower, commonly referred to as Saint Anne’s Tower or Port Tower, dates back to the 15th century. It is what remains of a fortified building of medieval origin, erected to protect the town against pirate raids and for the “quarantine” of unloaded goods. The town centre of Porto Potenza Picena developed around it.
Saint Anne’s Church
To the right of the Port Tower is the church of Saint Anne, a Romanesque-Gothic imitation with an interesting painting inside depicting the Virgin, the Child, Saint Joachim and Saint Anne (second half of the 17th century). The present church, after the destruction of the previous, was constructed on a project by the architect Eusebio Petetti of Potenza Picena and was completed in 1926. On 27 July of each year, there is an important fair in honour of the patron saint.
